We’re excited to announce that applications are now open for the Transition to Organic Partnership Program (TOPP) mentorship program for organic grain farmers. This USDA-supported program connects transitioning farmers with experienced organic mentors for a full year of personalized support, guidance, and learning.
Whether you’re newer to grain farming, custom hiring operators on your land, or an established farmer ready to commit to certified organic production, this program is here to help you take the next step.
Why Mentorship Matters
Organic farming is not just about following a list of practices—it’s a mindset, a shift in systems thinking, and a regulatory process that takes time and intention. That’s where mentorship makes the difference. Our program matches you with a mentor who has real-world experience and understands your region, soil, and goals.
You’ll set clear learning objectives together, check in regularly throughout the season, and benefit from trusted, one-on-one guidance as you make the leap toward USDA organic certification.
What’s Included
- Mentorship – Personalized support from a certified organic grain farmer who understands your context

Program Timeline
Mentor and mentee onboarding begins in December 2025, with the formal mentorship year running through November 2026.
Online learning and live webinars begin in winter 2026, along with the in-person orientation gathering at the Organic Grain Conference in winter 2026.
Who Can Participate
We’re currently accepting applications from both mentees and mentors.
Are you a farmer ready to transition to organic?
This program is for you if you:
- Are committed to transitioning some or all of your land to USDA certified organic
- Are a landowner overseeing a transition using custom operators
- Are an experienced grain grower ready to learn certified organic systems and standards
Mentees should already be farming and committed to adopting organic systems—not just exploring the idea. You’ll be paired with a mentor in your region who can support your transition with honest, grounded advice.
Are you an experienced organic grain farmer?
We’re also seeking mentors who:
- Have 3+ years of certified organic grain production experience
- Want to support the next generation of organic growers
- Communicate clearly and enjoy building strong farmer relationships
Mentors receive a stipend for their participation and play a critical role in strengthening the organic community. You’ll connect regularly with your mentee, participate in training and evaluation, and provide hands-on support that makes a lasting impact.
Ready to Join Us?
This is an excellent opportunity to receive personalized, high-quality support on your organic journey—or to give back as a mentor and help shape the future of organic grain in your region.
