Job/volunteer description: Located in East Central Illinois, Zumwalt Acres is a once-conventional corn and soy farm that is being converted to organic agroforestry. We’re recruiting our new cohort of farm apprentices for the fall, with the option of continuing into the spring! We are looking for apprentices age 18-24. In addition to planting trees and vegetable crops, we’re also experimenting with ways of maximizing the soil’s ability to capture carbon from the atmosphere using biochar and basalt. We’re looking for people who are interested in climate change mitigation, sustainable agriculture, and intentional living communities! We are fostering a community that is rooted in Jewish values and practices and we embrace people of all backgrounds to bring their values and perspectives into the conversation. Potential terms of stay are fall: late August–November or fall + spring: late August-May with a break in the winter. If you are interested, fill out our application by Monday, May 3rd at 11:59 pm CST: https://forms.gle/VDZkwtHJX7gRGib97. We don’t require any previous agricultural knowledge or experience and embrace people who come from underrepresented communities in farming. Feel free to direct message me with any questions!
