Job/volunteer description: Zumwalt Acres is a regenerative agriculture community in East Central Illinois, and we are recruiting our new cohort of farm apprentices for the summer, with the option of continuing into the fall! We are working to convert a once-conventional corn and soy farm into agroforestry, while serving as a center for learning in order to advance research and understanding of regenerative agriculture in the region. Apprentices are typically age 18 – 24. In addition to planting trees and vegetable crops, we’re also experimenting with ways of maximizing the soil’s ability to capture carbon from the atmosphere using biochar and basalt rock dust. We see the future of the farm as an interfaith community that’s practicing a sustainable model of agriculture for the Midwest. We’re looking for people who are interested in climate change mitigation, sustainable agriculture, and intentional living communities! Potential terms of stay are June–August or June–November.
If you are interested, please fill out our application by Friday, January 8th at 11:59pm CST: https://forms.gle/VDZkwtHJX7gRGib97, or reach out if this application deadline will pose a barrier to you. We don’t require any previous agricultural knowledge or experience and embrace people who come from underrepresented communities in farming.
Please reach out with any questions and feel free to explore our website for more information: https://www.zumwaltacres.org/.
Salary: We will work closely with apprentices to identify potential sources of funding. Monthly living costs are very low, and we are able to provide stipends to cover them for apprentices who need it.
