ABOUT THE NORTHSIDE YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM
This year will be the first year of our Northside Youth Employment Program established in response to our community’s desire for more opportunities for youth employment. The program will be modeled after a similar and successful Rooted program at Badger Rock Neighborhood Center on Madison’s South Side. We are committed to working with high school aged youth to help them develop job and life skills, as well as the agency to grow their own food, address racial food disparities, understand food policies and processes, and increase healthy food access in their communities and surrounding communities. We not only want youth to have a means of earning income, but also to understand their power in addressing food system related issues in their own communities and to support them in deepening their experience and skills in the areas of the food system they are most interested in.
POSITION OVERVIEW
We are seeking an enthusiastic person to facilitate an employment program for high school aged youth from June-August 2022. The facilitator will assist with creating and implementing a 10-week employment program that provides opportunities for youth to earn income working at Rooted farm and education sites. At the same time, the facilitator will guide youth through many different aspects of the food system, including agriculture, culinary arts, food justice, and community engagement. The facilitator will follow program participants’ leads whenever possible to help them gain experience and develop skills around their interests while supporting them in completion of tasks at each site.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND REPONSIBILITIES
Candidate must be dependable, prompt, have a willingness to ask questions, and maintain a high energy, positive professional attitude with excellent people skills.
Develop and contribute to curriculum and program activities.
Implement daily program activities with ability to pivot to meet the needs and interest of youth.
Work collaboratively with other program and organization staff.
Communicate effectively to guardian(s) of program participants as needed.
Attend weekly team meetings.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
This position does not require agricultural experience, but is a plus.
Two years of experience with and knowledge of working with high school aged youth.
Ability and willingness to work in all weather conditions.
Ability to lift 50 lbs.
Strong organizational and communication skills and a demonstrated ability to follow through on commitments, responsibilities, and tasks.
Flexibility and willingness to grow in response to needs or changes in the field.
Commitment to mission and values of Rooted, including social justice and racial equity.
Experience working with diverse groups of people in community settings.
Additional Information & Requirements
Must have access to reliable transportation.
Ability to pass a standard background check.
POSITION CLASSIFICATION, SALARY & SCHEDULE
This position is FLSA Non-Exempt; full-time LTE at 40 hours per week; $15/hour; June 6, 2022 – August 26, 2022.
