Job/volunteer description: ABOUT TROY FARM
Troy Farm is a vegetable production and education project of Rooted that has been growing certified organic vegetables on Madison’s Northside since 2001. Troy Farm sells produce to farm members and other Madison residents at our on-site farm stand on Thursday evenings and at the Northside Farmers’ Market on Sunday mornings, and we deliver produce boxes weekly to partner organizations. Through our Urban Farmer Training program, we teach small-scale, organic growing practices and explore the role of urban farms in local food systems and community organizing.
POSITION OVERVIEW
The current production of Troy Farm includes 3+ acres of field as well as greenhouse production of certified organic vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers. The Troy Farm Manager will work closely with the Troy Farm Director to ensure that the work of Troy Farm is aligned with Rooted’s commitment to enabling people to grow and thrive in healthy, equitable, and sustainable neighborhoods. The Farm Manager trains and supervises Urban Farmer Trainees and volunteers.
This position reports to the Farm Director.
SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage and operate all aspects of 3-acre urban farm production as part of an integrated farm management team, including tillage, planting, cultivation, pest control, harvesting, infrastructure improvements, packing, selling, greenhouse operations, record keeping. Additionally, the Farm Manager will:
Supervise and manage Urban Farmer Trainees and volunteers in all aspects of crop production and sales.
Lead sales crew for Thursday Farm Stand or Sunday Northside Farmers’ Market.
Work with the Farm Director to identify and execute weekly production priorities and goals.
Help implement and market Troy Farm’s social enterprises, including direct-to-consumer sales, on-farm events, social media, newsletter communication, and annual plant sale.
Assist with annual farm production plans, seed orders, planting calendar, etc.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Build relationships and work collaboratively with community partners.
Coordinate with youth employment program.
Attend farm team, land-based program team, and organization staff meetings.
Assist with tours and Rooted events.
Assist Farm Director with grant writing
Act as Rooted’s ambassador by effectively communicating the organization’s mission and programs.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Experience supervising employees, trainees, interns and/or volunteers.
Strong organizational and communication skills.
1-2 seasons experience in vegetable growing or similar experience.
Ability and willingness to work in all weather conditions.
Commitment to mission and values of Rooted, including social justice racial equity.
Proficient use of Microsoft Excel and other office software or willingness to learn.
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Experience working with diverse groups of people in community settings.
Experience working with non-profit organizations and/or grant writing.
Experience working with youth and/or adult education.
Experience in community engagement and/or community organizing.
Multilingual in Spanish or HMoob a plus.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION/REQUIREDMENTS
Must have access to reliable transportation and provide a copy of a valid driver’s license.
Willingness and ability to work some weekend and evening hours.
Ability to pass standard background check.
POSITION CLASSIFICATION
This position is a FLSA non-exempt, full time (40 hrs./week).
Salaried at a range of $17-19/hour, depending on experience.
Eligible for benefits, including paid time off, health, dental, and retirement.
This position has a six (6) month probationary period.
This position works closely with the Farm Director.
